Example: 64 Example: 3What Is a Root in Math?
A root of a number (√) is a value that, when multiplied by itself a certain number of times (n), gives the original number.
Formula:
n√a = b
meansbⁿ = a
Common Roots & Examples:
Square Root (n=2): √9 = 3 (because 3 × 3 = 9)
Cube Root (n=3): ∛27 = 3 (because 3 × 3 × 3 = 27)
Fourth Root (n=4): ∜16 = 2 (because 2 × 2 × 2 × 2 = 16)
Calculating roots manually can be complex, but our free online Root Calculator makes it instant!
How to Use Our Root Calculator?
Enter the number (e.g., 64).
Enter the root degree (e.g., 3 for cube root).
Get instant results! (e.g., ∛64 = 4)
✅ Works for positive & negative numbers (where applicable).
✅ Real-time calculation (no “Calculate” button needed).
✅ Exact + decimal results (toggle between √2 and 1.414).
How to Estimate Roots Manually?
1. Estimating Square Roots (√a)
To find √a without a calculator:
Guess a number b.
Divide a by b → get c.
Average b and c → new guess.
Repeat until precise.
Example: Find √27 to 3 decimal places
Guess: 5.125
Step 1: 27 ÷ 5.125 ≈ 5.268
Step 2: (5.125 + 5.268)/2 ≈ 5.197
Step 3: 27 ÷ 5.197 ≈ 5.195
Final: (5.195 + 5.197)/2 ≈ 5.196
2. Estimating Nth Roots (n√a)
For higher roots (like cube, fourth, etc.):
Guess a number b.
Divide a by bⁿ⁻¹ → get c.
Average:
[b × (n-1) + c] / n
→ new guess.Repeat until accurate.
Example: Find ⁸√15 to 3 decimal places
Guess: 1.432
Step 1: 15 ÷ (1.432⁷) ≈ 1.405
Step 2: (1.432 × 7 + 1.405)/8 ≈ 1.388
Final: After repeating → ≈1.403
